Russell Philip Menelly, 93 of Newton, passed away on 10 November 2017 after a long illness. Russell was born on August 24, 1924 in Waverley, Massachusetts. In 1946 he met his future wife, Lillian Palmieri Menelly, on her birthday in Waltham, Massachusetts and they were married later that year in Newton, Massachusetts. Russell served in the Marines from 1943 to 1946 with service in the Pacific and in China during World War II. After the war he worked as a chef in the Boston area until 1953 when he initially joined his brother Ernest and later his other brother, Henry Menelly, running Midnite Foods and Laundromat in Newton until his retirement in 1978.

Russell is preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Menelly and Concetta Menelly, brothers Philip Menelly, Joseph Menelly, and Ernest Menelly, sisters Mary Moniz and Eva Porter. He is survived by his wife Lillian, brother Henry Menelly of Waltham, daughters Judith Ann Metraux of Staunton, Virginia and Lisa Ann Menelly of Newton, son-in-law Daniel Metraux of Staunton, Virginia, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Russell was an avid gardener and breeder of tropical fish. He enjoyed visiting botanical gardens throughout the United States. Above all else, he loved his family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Russell’s memory may be given to the charity of your choice. Russell will be laid to rest in the Newton Cemetery in a family graveside service on a future date.
