William J. “Red” Barry of Newton, passed away September 1 at Beth Israel Medical Center in Boston at the age of 89.


 Bill was a retired Recreation Supervisor with the City of Newton.   During  his years with the Newton Recreation Department, he was the director of the Newton PeeWee Hockey program,  the Twilight League Softball and winter basketball programs.


 Bill was a proud U.S. Navy veteran having served at the New London Submarine Base in Connecticut.  He was a pitcher on the Sub Base

 baseball team that played for the Eastern Naval District Championship.   


He was a graduate of Newton High School, and Curry College.  


Bill was the husband of the late Jeanne Barry.


 He is survived by his children, Lynn (Mary) and her husband Mike Fraboni of Suffield, Connecticut,  Karen Barry of Newton and her

 fiancé Eddie Marando,  Charles (Chuck) of Newton and his wife Lisa (Woloski) of Newton and his grandsons Brandon and Ryan Barry.


Also survived by his sisters Lois Hutch and Marcia Ash, brother-in-law Francis Hutch, sister-in-law, Janice Sanborn and nieces & nephews.

He was the brother of the late Priscilla Fogerty.


Visiting hours at the Andrew J. Magni & Son Funeral Home, 365 Watertown St, Rt. 16, Newton on Thursday, September 7, from 4-7pm.  A funeral mass will be held at Our  Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington St, in Newtonville on Friday, September 8 at 10:30am.

Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Needham.
